This upcycled jacket is made from Pendleton and/or other Native American blanket scraps. Handstitched in place with clean lines, these are well constructed, one-of-a-kind pieces that are given new life from scraps that may have been otherwise thrown away.

A little bit about the history of Pendleton: The company was started in the early 1900s by the Bishop brothers, who came to eastern Oregon to try their hand at the blanket business. Their blankets' patterns were designed to appeal to Pendleton's first customers: Native Americans, who used these trade blankets not only for their durability, but also to mark special occasions such as births, weddings, and funerals, which continues today. 

In the Los Ojos blanket, which is the most common blanket scraps that SDCV uses, Spanish crosses, diamond-shaped "eyes" (ojos) and the symbols of the Navajo Four Mountains of Creation are prevalent. According to Navajo beliefs, The Holy People put four sacred mountains in four different directions, Mt. Blanca to the east, Mt. Taylor to the south, San Francisco Peak to the west and Mt Hesperus to the north near Durango, Colorado, thus creating Navajoland (or the Navajo Nation).

To help honor the original Native American motifs of these blankets, SDCV will happily contribute 10% of the proceeds to the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its mission is to empower creativity and leadership in Native Arts and cultures through higher education, life-long learning, and outreach.
